Jorge Luis Borges

  • "Under the trees of England I meditated on this lost and perhaps mythical labyrinth. I imagined it untouched and perfect on the secret summit of some mountain; I imagined it drowned under rice paddies or beneath the sea; I imagined it infinite, made not only of eight-sided pavilions and of twisting paths but also of rivers, provinces and kingdoms. I thought of a maze of mazes, of a sinuous, ever growing maze which would take in both past and future and would somehow involve the stars."

Deaths in the greater free will community

Benjamin Libet recently passed away. An obituary can be found here.

And, if you didn't already hear the very sad news, Susan Hurley recently passed away as well. No obituaries seem to be up yet, but here's a link to the announcement on the Leiter Reports.

Thanks very much for posting this, Manuel.

I did not know Libet, so I cannot comment personally, except to express my regrets.

I did know Susan Hurley, and I am deeply saddened by her death. She was an incredibly prolific philosopher, and her scope was extraordinarily broad. I highly recommend to readers of this blog her Harvard University Press book on the connections between moral responsibility and distributive justice. Although I did not know her well, she seemed to me to be a very kind, thoughtful, and elegant person, and I am very sad that we in the philosophical community have lost her.

Susan was very kind to me in helping me to make contact with people in Oxford (where she was a fellow of All Souls). Her breadth and her incisiveness was awesome. She will be missed.

Very sad news. My condolations to their families and friends. From the distance i´ve read many of their books.
